THE BIRTH MAP
BOLDLY GOING WHERE NO BIRTH PLAN HAS GONE BEFORE
Don't leave your birth to chance! My book is more than just another birth book.
THE BIRTH MAP: Boldly Going Where No Birth Plan Has Gone Before takes you through the Informed Birth Preparation process leaving you Informed, Prepared and Confident. THE BIRTH MAP covers risk assessment and informed decision making, what to expect during labour and birth, and then takes you into The Beyond. Align reality and expectation to create your best birth.
It is Your Birth, Your Way...no matter what.
The book does not give you the answers.
It is much more powerful than that.
It gives you The Questions you need in order to make Informed Decisions.
Birth Partners are involved in the preparation process, so are familiar with the reasoning behind each decision in the map. They may not need to refer to The Birth Map, as a written document, during labour, but having it on hand allows them to refer to it in the event of 'detours'. The "if this, then that" simplicity of the written document prompts the necessary discussion needed with care providers, reminding all parties of the pre-made informed consent/refusal for various procedures.
The 'FAST BIRTH PATHWAY'
is where you consider the possibility of an 'unassisted birth'. Many people find preparing for this pathway helps with their other pathways, as the Fast Birth Pathway is all about understanding physiological birth.
THE EXPECTED PATHWAY
and THE CONTINGENCY PATHWAY
are your 'order of business'. These pathways are determined by your circumstances. The Expected Pathway could be a spontaneous labour, an induction or a caesarean plan. The Contingency is your alternatives. These pathways ensure your bases are covered.
There is Your Way
This means no on-the-spot decisions made under duress, in fear or with limited information and time.
A Birth Map will not 'get thrown out the window'
The power of the Birth Map is the Informed Birth Preparation process of making Informed Decisions in advance.
This power translates into confidence, which helps you and your birth support relax.
Being relaxed means you are likely to birth without need of intervention.

This revolutionary approach to birth preparation is so stunningly simply to implement, and yet extraordinarily powerful.
Are you ready to boldly go where no birth plan has gone before?
The Birth Map is the creation of Catherine Bell - a Mother of four, who trained as a doula and breastfeeding educator in order to reclaim the knowledge that is our birth right. In observing that standard maternity care means women's reasonable expectations are considered unrealistic, she sort to bridge the gap. The birth plan, a tool intended to give agency and aid communication, was falling short. Catherine developed a new tool, building on the intent of the birth plan, working within the context of standard care to help women to unleash the power they hold within by giving them the means to take responsibility. From here, she saw that maternity care providers were just as eager to see this gap closed: and Birth Cartography evolved. Birth Cartography gives care providers the foundation to build relationships based in respectful maternity care , with effective communication in order to create an environment for informed decision making.
